>which may or may not have to do with shifting PR strategies hmmm we need to examine the singular impact the online popularization of the term "bestie" has had on fandom Fr
>the desire to ":3" when ruining the other guy's cool trick it really makes me laugh out loud when otter shows off the flashiest glove saves and then throws the puck out like girl relaxxx.... i listened to an interview of his where he specifically was like yeah it felt great to RUIN those people's nights in calgary or something to that degree of aggression and i can't help but enjoy how so much of his motivation is specifically about fucking over the fans too and not just the guys on the other team (even if he is similarly motivated by shit like not letting ovechkin get his goal record etc.).... robo goalie-adjacent mentality is interesting because i wonder how much of his attachment naturally grew from enjoying the exclusivity of being around in goalie practice and getting to work on his game in isolation from other guys instead of inherently sharing an otter-esque mentality
but yeah like.... hm. tangentially related to what you were saying about that "not just jason" article i feel like i'm increasingly being spun around by his media coverage because it seems like no one truly knows what/who they actually want him to be for the franchise. and maybe he doesn't even know that himself! the league is truly stifled by its tendency toward conflating visibility/marketability with veneration for its players which is ultimately unsurprising but kind of creates this awkward crossroads. like yes robo will be on the chel 24 cover but at what cost. however i quite enjoyed the recent article from nhl dot com that explains how his biggest pregame routine is FACETIMING this guy who will pull up all his shifts from the previous game on his ipad and go over what he needs to fix right before he leaves for the rink 😭 he's like a parody of himself. & then when it talks about his embracing a role as face of the franchise he's specifically quoted with saying "it fits my character" which is like oh. bro. what IS your character...... the complexities of being good and knowing that you're good but carrying the personal doubt of longterm consistency and not being naturally inclined toward the narratives fans and media try to embed for you but graciously entertaining them anyway? i do think a robotter thread is that they're similarly motivated by external adversity even if robo's mindset is maybe less about proving other people wrong than it is about having a structured goal to work toward and chasing an endpoint that maybe becomes too ambiguous when his coverage is overly adulatory...? it does make me lose it a bit when i take a second to look at his entire existence and ultimately straightforward path to full-time nhl status compared to perpetually-injured nrob who has officially reached sunk cost territory for the leafs and will probably never live up to what he should have been for them
